If the majority of those swings are off of a tee I feel sorry for the kid as he is largely wasting his time.

If the majority of those swings are taken against a moving ball, then the practice he is getting is invaluable. His hypotheses can be tested more thoroughly and he can test more of them in a shorter period of time compared to the average player who does not have the opportunity to practice extensively on a daily basis. This of course assumes he is not just going through the motions when he swings, but rather actually taking time to notice success rates and changes in success rates when he makes certain adjustments to technique and mental focus.
