Actually Formica was developed by two Westinghouse employees as a substitute for electric panels that was using a natural mineral "mica" for insulation. Westinghouse found no good use for the product and the two engineers that developed this paper impregnated with phenolic resin and started a little company.
Since this was a replaced for the Mica they called the company ForMica. For the first decade or so it was used only for electrical products as a "circuit" board. In the late 20's they made the top layer of paper with a design and hence the laminate kitchen countertop industry was born.
