Luncheon of the Boating Party by Renoir. One of the greatest modern paintings of the nineteenth century. For an interpretation of other pictures from the 19th and 20th centuries, see: Analysis of Modern Paintings One of the finest and most versatile of Impressionist painters , Renoir drew his artistic inspiration from many different sources.

His first job, for instance, was painting patterns onto ceramic pottery; he also studied at the traditionalist Ecole des Beaux-Arts ; copied works by Old Masters like Veronese and Rubens, as well as 18th century French painting , at the Louvre; and was influenced by both the colour of Delacroix and the realism of Gustave Courbet. A close friend of Claude Monet , with whom he often painted, he was renowned for his Impressionist landscape painting notably his treatment of dappled light , and also produced some outstanding Impressionist portraits of men, women and children.

Luncheon Of the Boating Party - acknowledged to be one of his greatest genre paintings - was created as he was beginning to switch from plein-air painting to studio work. When Renoir completed this work, Impressionism was still the dominant style of modern art - a style characterized by its freshness and spontaneity, and by its introduction of new themes, notably everyday scenes of no particular significance.

And he considered Luncheon of the Boating Party not just one of the gems of his collection but "one of the greatest paintings in the world. In the wake of the deaths of his brother and father within a year of each other, Phillips attended an exhibition in New York City where he spotted Luncheon of the Boating Party. It moved him so profoundly that he became obsessed. He sailed to France to secure its purchase, and spent his entire year's art-buying budget on this one work.

Legend has it that fellow collector Dr. Albert C. Barnes once said to Phillips, "That's the only Renoir you have, isn't it? Robinson was best known for playing gangsters in movies like Key Largo and Little Caesar Off screen, he was a passionate art enthusiast, who famously said , "For over thirty years I made periodic visits to Renoir's Luncheon of the Boating Party in a Washington museum, and stood before that magnificent masterpiece hour after hour, day after day, plotting ways to steal it.

BY Kristy Puchko. Luncheon of the Boating Party measures in at 51 by 68 inches. The "Moulin de la Galette" has very open brushwork and it's very difficult to find the edges or contours of forms.

And here, we have forms that seems much more three-dimensional, where the forms really do have contours and there's a real sense of mass to the figures.

That's actually the son of the proprietor of the restaurant. The other man, in the straw hat, that's the artist Caillebotte, who is one of the great Impressionist painters, who focused on both the city and the suburbs. He himself loved the boats and actually was an active rower. And that's not an uncommon feeling that one gets from looking at Renoir paintings.

There's a wonderful weight and counter-weight throughout this painting. The male figure in the upper right in the striped jacket who leans forward, looks down at this young woman, but she looks at the man across the table from her, and he looks at the young woman playing with the dog. Look at the way he's played that brilliant orange across the surface. It's sometimes a ribbon, it's sometimes flowers on a hat.

But it's more than just the colors. I can hear the china, I can hear the clinking of glasses, I can hear the rustle of the leaves in the wind. We think it was probably completed in the studio, but when artists paint out of doors, a smaller painting is usually preferable, and easier to deal with. You have the same breeze, you have light changing. It's not a controllable environment.
