For six seasons the Patriots played at Fenway Park. They played their last game at the ballpark in a win against the Cincinnati Bengals in , moving to Foxboro Stadium the next year.
The setup for football games at Fenway Park was relatively simple. The gridiron was laid out over the baseball infield and into right field. Bleachers were set up in what was left field during baseball games. It was also plastered in billboards and advertisements before it was cleaned up and painted the iconic Fenway green color in The Monster is home to the oldest hand-operated scoreboard in the league, installed in and still manned by someone during every game who updates not only the Red Sox game inning-by-inning, but also all of the out-of-town games in both leagues as well as the league standings.
Ads have taken over the wall again since but not quite to the extent that they had prior to In order to stabilize the high wall, a foot high sloping incline which stretched from the left field foul line to center field ran along the edge of the outfield.
Red Sox left fielder Duffy Lewis became adept at running up and down this to field balls, hence its name. For most of its existence including the whole of my childhood , the Green Monster was topped with a sloping net that caught most of the home run balls hit up there.
In , the wall was renovated to include new tiered seating on top. Those seats offer some of the best views at the highest prices in the entire ballpark. Beyond the wall in nearby Kenmore Square sits the iconic Citgo sign. It was installed in , renovated to its current state in , and has been visible on Sox games on TV for years. When I was a kid, I always thought it was right behind the Monster so I was shocked when I first went to the park as a teenager to see that it was in fact a couple of blocks away.
Lastly, some thumbnail stats on Fenway Park. The Red Sox have one of the smallest ballparks in terms of both size and capacity in the entire league even after numerous new seating areas and renovations have occurred over the last century. For comparison's sake, the much larger "Old" Comiskey Park in Chicago had several dozen home runs hit over its roof, yet no one has ever hit one over Fenway's much shorter right field roof. The pole was named after Johnny Pesky , a light-hitting shortstop and long-time coach for the Red Sox, who hit some of his six home runs at Fenway Park around the pole but never off the pole.
Pesky and the Red Sox give credit to pitcher Mel Parnell for coining the name. The most notable for Pesky is a two-run homer in the eighth inning of the Opening Day game to win the game in his career, Pesky hit 17 home runs. On September 27, , on Pesky 's 87th birthday, the Red Sox organization officially dedicated the right field foul pole as Pesky's Pole with a commemorative plaque placed at its base.
Fisk provided one of baseball's most enduring moments in Game 6 of the World Series against the Reds. Facing Reds right-hander Pat Darcy in the 12th inning with the score tied at 6, Fisk hit a long fly ball down the left field line.
It appeared to be heading foul, but Fisk, after initially appearing unsure of whether or not to continue running to first base, famously jumped and waved his arms to the right as if to somehow direct the ball fair. It ricocheted off the foul pole, winning the game for the Red Sox and sending the series to a seventh and deciding game the next night, which Cincinnati won. Boston Red Sox Wiki Explore. I didn't even get the ball. They say it bounced a dozen rows higher, but after it hit my head, I was no longer interested.
I couldn't see the ball. Nobody could. In , the Green Monster was built standing at 37 feet out in the left field. The distance from home plate to the foul pole sits at feet. Initially, you only had ads on the high wall, but that changed with the green coloring in Carlton Fisk made the left-field foul pole famous with his home run in game 6 of the World Series. The left-field wall today remains the most iconic part of the ballpark.
The bullpen was built in to bring the outfield walls closer for Ted Williams to hit more home runs at the stadium. A right-field close to the hitter was similar to the short porch distance of Yankee Stadium and Babe Ruth. The Triangle is the area out in the right-center field bleachers where the outfield walls form a triangle. The triangle sits out at feet from home plate. Finally, we come to the Pesky Pole out in Right Field.
The naming of the pole came from the Red Sox player, Johnny Pesky.
