They cause too much brain damage. How come whenever it is time for them to pick their Jim Click-furnished car, AU players never choose a Japanese car? Now, you still wanna tell that joke?
What do you say when you see an Arizona graduate in a suit? Will the defendant please rise. How many U of A players does it take to screw in a light blub? One, but it never gets done.
They just hold the bulb up and wait for the world to revolve around them. What should you do if you find three UA football fans buried up to their neck in cement? Get more cement. How do you know the toothbrush was invented in Tucson? The USC fan insists he is the most loyal. Not to be outdone, the ASU fan is next to profess his love for his team. Two University of Arizona football players were walking in the woods. How can you tell if a Wildcat football player has a girlfriend?
Did you hear about the power outage at the U of A library? Twenty seven students were stuck on the escalator for four hours. Why do UA grads put their diplomas on their dashboard? So they can park in handicap spaces! For me, school spirit directly correlated to the amount of love students had toward their school and was a measurement of how happy they were.
As I watched others commit to elite universities in the Ivy League or a likely equivalent, I realized my problem was rooted in the much bigger issue of elitism. Coming from a largely white, upper-middle class town, a private liberal arts education was considered the norm in many cases.
News, seemed discouraging at first. By going to a large state school on the other side of the country, I strayed from this status quo leaving me feeling felt out of place and judged — I was afraid people would view my choice as lacking challenge and promise. When a peer commented it might be difficult to compete for graduate school with a state school degree, I became irritated by the ignorance of those around me, rather than feeling ashamed in myself and choice.
Why did my heavily thought-out decision seem to reflect poorly when it was one of the smartest decisions I could make? The reality was ASU had what I needed to thrive, allowing me to became part of a university that tries to establish an accessible environment for all students. The ASU Charter states we are "measured not by whom we exclude, but rather by whom we include and how they succeed.
Heard a great joke today that I would like to share: Arizona State University. In truth, ASU should be regarded as much more than simply a convenient target for cheap jokes about higher education. ASU does have a particularly high admission rate, accepting 83 percent of applicants in fall However, I believe this high rate is something to be proud rather than ashamed of.
ASU has worked hard to establish itself as inclusive and accessible, a goal which all public universities should strive for. After all, education is a public good and ASU is a public university, so valuing access should be both natural and necessary. Education is empowerment, a principle for which exclusivity is counterproductive. Join Today. Sign Up. I Support Learn More.
