Plain water provides the hydration all of us need to live. We know children who drink mostly water and plain milk from a young age tend to continue drinking them as they age. But we also know, bad habits form early. PS: The same goes for food preferences. This helps develop cup drinking skills and familiarity with water. Once children are exposed to juice, it may be difficult to limit portions or get them to prefer plain water. However, infants less than 1 year of age should not drink juice. Eating fruit is always preferred to drinking juice. Flavored milk. Chocolate, strawberry, and other flavored milks contain added sugars.

Added sugars should be avoided in children less than 2 years of age. Children aged also should avoid flavored milk to minimize added sugars intake and avoid developing a preference for sweet tastes. Eating whole fruit is much healthier than drinking fruit juice.

Lead by example by sipping on your own water throughout the day. Get your child involved by letting them pick out their own sippy cup and helping them fill it up themselves.

Get a cup with their favorite color or character on it and let them take it with them to play in other rooms around the house. Fruits like watermelon are dripping with fluids that count towards hydration.

Remember to increase the amount of water they drink the more they sweat from hot weather or exercise. How much water should a 1-year-old drink? Can a toddler drink too much water?

What about other drinks? Iron deficiency can affect growth and may lead to learning and behavioral problems. And it can lead to iron-deficiency anemia too few red blood cells in the body. Iron is needed to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. Without enough iron and red blood cells, the body's tissues and organs get less oxygen and don't work as well as they should.
